Dr. Bennie I. Osburn from University of California, Davis will give a seminar on Tuesday 13th of June at 10:00 in room Ratatosk, VHC, SLU, Uppsala - "Expanding the Role of Veterinary Medicine in Society".
A brief overview of the strategy for expanding the role of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to address the opportunities and role that veterinary medicine can contribute to local, national and global society will be described.  Two programs will be discussed, the One Health Institute and the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security (WIFSS), with most of the discussion focused on WIFSS.  A brief discussion will be on the historical development of the program followed by program emphasis including research, education, outreach, and training.  The strategy is to incorporate the One Health concept of addressing food systems from the overlapping nexus of the environment including plants, animals and people.  The multidisciplinary approaches are included in a conceptual educational model, the role of current courses looking at disasters, including agroterrorism, natural disasters and foodborne disease outbreaks. The source of funding for these programs will be discussed. How can we help you expand the role of veterinary medicine in the Swedish and European societies?
Dr. Osburn is Dean Emeritus of the School of Veterinary Medicine and present Director for Outreach and Training at Western Institute for Food Safety and Security.
