Societal costs of five food-borne diseases in Sweden

Submitted by ohsadmin

Costs caused by food poisoning in Sweden exceed one billion SEK per year according to a new analysis from AgriFood Economics Centre that examined the economic impact of five common food-borne diseases (campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, yersiniosis, shigellosis and EHEC).

Campylobacter infections account for more than 60% of the total cost, but EHEC infections are the most expensive on a per case basis. A case of EHEC costs society more than twice as much as a case of any of the other diseases.
